Industry concern over ‘Filter choking’

Marine Industry complaints rise…

The problem of ‘Filter choking’ has caused increased concern in the Marine Industry following recent complaints of filter choking in vessels using fuel supplied in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region and the Belgian port of Zeebrugge.

Viswa Lab, the fuel testing agency, has recommended that ship operators take “all due precautions” and bring any problems to the notice of their suppliers.

The reported problems follow a warning last month that recent European cases showing the presence of DCPD in bunker fuels might be symptomatic of more widespread problems.

Implications of unclean fuel

Fuel cleanliness is an important issue to avoid major fuel operability problems - severe filter choking carries the risk of shutting down the engine - especially as modern fuel injectors and injection pumps are being manufactured to more precise tolerances. Particles due to contamination, degradation, or corrosion of storage vessels can quickly clog filtration systems.

Filter Blocking Testing

Seta’s Multi Filtration Tester (MFT) is a unique instrument designed to test the Filter Blocking Tendency (FBT) and Filterability Quality Factor (FQF) of diesel, biodiesel, gas oil, gas turbine fuel and kerosine.

Test parameters for IP 387/D2068 and D6426 test are pre-programmed into the Multi Filtration Tester and its compact design with a robust carrying case make it easily transportable from the laboratory to the test site.
